- What is SeventyFaces.com?
SeventyFaces.com is the online home of divrei Torah -- inspirational and thought-provoking articles based on an aspect of Torah. As the number of contributions grows, the site will become a valuable resource for finding interesting material, whether as an educator or as a layperson looking for an interesting discussion over a Shabbat table. It is also an easy way to share your own thoughts and divrei Torah with the greater Jewish community -- with the complete freedom to edit your work and (if you choose) enter discussions with other site members about what you have written.
- Why "seventy faces"?
There is a famous phrase in the Talmud: "Shiv'im Panim LaTorah", that the Torah has "seventy faces". Classically, this is a reflection of the myriad ways in which a single verse can be interpreted: superficially (pshat), exegetically (drash), mystically, historically, etc. Metaphorically, shiv'im panim laTorah can mean that person is reflected in the Torah, and each person's "take" on the Torah can be of interest to the other faces in the community. This site is an attempt to bring those faces and those interations together in a single site.
- Who is behind SeventyFaces.com?
SeventyFaces.com is not affiliated with any particular organization or movement. It was created because the new community-based technologies on the web are simply too compelling not to apply to one of the oldest communities in history. - Do I need to be a rabbi to contribute?
No. Anyone with an interesting dvar Torah is welcome to post it on the site.
- How can I be sure the divrei Torah on this site will align with my hashkafa (world view)?
You can't. But you can search for certain terms that match your areas of interest, and subscribe to authors whom you trust and admire. You can choose to read or not read whatever suits you, and mark as a "favorite" or print any dvar Torah that you find particularly interesting. If you disagree with what someone has written, you may add a comment to join the discussion, or simply choose to read something else that you find more meaningful.
- How is SeventyFaces.com supported?
The site is currently operating on a minimal budget, in order to get up and running as quickly and inexpensively as possible. Going forward, if operating costs rise, we may pursue other means of support, including sponsorship and/or advertising. You may contact info@seventyfaces.com for more specific questions.
