My Weekly Drash (a mini D'Var Torah) - Va'etchanan

“Do not try the Lord your God, as you did at Massah,” warns Moses in this week’s Parshah Va-Ethannan (Deut. 6:16). Massah is where they complained about lacking water (Exo. 17:1-7). It becomes a question of faith. It’s one thing to pray for God’s support. It’s another to demand constant miraculous showings so as to have sufficient “proof” of the covenant. Imagine constantly saying to a spouse, “Prove you love me.” You’d be lucky if the marriage endured and you escaped serious injury. How much more so should we trust in God and not look at every problem as a new test God must pass if He is to retain our loyalty? Instead, as Moses suggests just a few verses later, we should reflect on all the signs we’ve already received as when we were freed from slavery in Egypt and delivered to the Promised Land.
